Summer Study Tour
to Turkey!
History, Culture, Politics and Society in Turkey
Designed to provide a rich historical and cultural experience through intense
study, including lectures and fieldtrips, this summer study tour to Turkey
will be based at Koç University in Istanbul, Turkey, and is offered
by the University of Nevada, Reno’s departments of history, political
science and sociology. Participants will also visit a variety of exciting
and interesting cultural, religious and historical sites throughout their
stay in Istanbul. Participants can expect an educationally rewarding adventure!
Examining the social, political, and economic structure of Turkey and its
transformation from Empire to Republic, this interdisciplinary study tour
will explore the dynamics of the modernization process in this centrally
located country of many contrasts in the heart of the Middle East. The origins
and development of Turkish society from the Ottoman conquest of Byzantium
in 1453 to the present-day Turkish Republic will be examined.

or graduate credits, included in the fee, may be earned in one of these courses

A pre-trip meeting will be held in April 2008. The group will convene in
Istanbul on Sunday, June 8, 2008, and will disband in Istanbul on Monday,
June 23, 2008. Participants may extend their stays at their own expense.
(Airfare is not included in the fee.)

Dates and fees are subject to change. Individuals may extend their stays
overseas to explore and travel at their own expense.

Fee: $2,500 (airfare not included), includes
tuition for three undergraduate or graduate credits; university dormitory accommodations
in Istanbul, double occupancy, and breakfast each day; airport shuttle service,
round trip, in Istanbul; local transportation and admission to museums and
attractions for weekday course field trips; textbook and course materials.
Participants
are responsible for airline transportation to and from Istanbul, passport
and visa fees, individual sightseeing, incidental and activity expenses,
and all meals except breakfasts. Students accepted into this Summer Study
Tour to Turkey who are admitted to a degree program at any U.S. university
and are enrolled in Spring 2008 will pay reduced program fees.
