Independent Learning and You:
How it Works
- Select a course or courses.
- Fill out the enrollment form.
You have the choice of enrolling by mail; in person at the independent
learning office; or by phone or fax using MasterCard, VISA, American Express
or Discover Card.
- To earn high school credit, have your
high school principal or other authorized school personnel sign the enrollment
form verifying that credit is to be granted.
- The independent learning personnel
will send you your course syllabus, books, cover sheets for lessons, and
envelopes.
- You may begin working on the course as soon
as you receive the course materials. Before starting on the first lesson,
be sure to read through the general instructions and the introduction
contained in the syllabus. When mailing or dropping off lessons, please
staple a cover sheet to the top of each lesson and be sure to write the
lesson number in the appropriate box.
- If you are taking an online class, click
here for additional
information about technical system requirements, course access and procedures.
- Mail,
e-mail or bring your completed lessons to the independent learning office.
We act as the intermediary between you and your instructor. You may not
send lessons directly to your instructor.
- Examinations must be taken under
supervision. Forms are provided in your syllabus to request that your examinations
be sent to a proctor. It is your responsibility to locate a proctor, provide
us with his or her name and address, and make an appointment to take the
examination under that person's
supervision. When you plan to take the test, be sure to bring along positive
identification containing your photograph and signature. If the final grade
is to be sent to your school, include that school's name and address
and the principal's name on the front cover of the final examination.
- If
you are taking a course for credit toward high school graduation, the
original copy of the final grade report will be sent to the high school
principal you have indicated on your final examination cover sheet. If
none is indicated, the grade report will be sent to you only.
- Plan ahead.
You have one year from the date of enrollment to complete the course.
Do not plan to complete the course in less than the minimum time, which
is six weeks from the date the first lesson is received in our office.
- If
you are meeting a graduation deadline, allow at least four weeks prior
to that date as the final day to submit your last assignment. Take your
final examination no later than three weeks before the date that your
grade must be received at your school.
