About Independent Learning
Independent Learning is a department in Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Our main mission is to provide students the opportunity to take quality courses via individualized methods of learning that are not bound by time or place. We are the sole provider of university credit through independent learning in the state of Nevada. We offer courses from the University of Nevada, Reno as well as high school credit courses.

Please note: Fees for Independent Learning courses are $125 per undergraduate credit and $180 per graduate credit. (We anticipate Fall 2008 fees will be $138 for undergraduate credit and $207 for graduate credit.)

Delivery method options
We currently offer courses by three different delivery models. Click on the links below for the policies for each method. Each course listing will indicate in which model(s) the course is available. Look for the corresponding icons next to each course.

The delivery methods are:

Classroom attendance
No classroom attendance is necessary. We offer a method of instruction affording you the convenience of studying when and where you choose. Because there are no set classroom meetings, the courses allow you more flexibility in scheduling your time to accommodate your busy lifestyle. This freedom from a set schedule requires you to provide your own motivation, discipline, persistence and good study habits in order to succeed.

Exams
All courses have proctored examinations, which can be set up with acceptable proctors if you live outside the Reno/Sparks area. Click here for more information about exams.

Accreditation
The University of Nevada, Reno is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Northwest Association, an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education. The University has been accredited since 1938. In addition, all credit courses and instructors have been approved by departments or colleges of the University of Nevada, Reno. Our high school credit courses meet Nevada State Department of Education approval.

Civility
It is the student’s responsibility to contribute to the maintenance of a campus environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and diversity. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a civil manner that contributes to a positive learning environment for all.
Harassment of one individual by another — in person, via e-mail or in electronic discussions — is uncivil behavior, which can pollute the learning environment and discourage the open expression of ideas on academic subjects.

Independent Learning and the University are committed to an orderly learning environment that protects the right of free speech, and do not tolerate personal intimidation of any kind. Students who do not conduct themselves in a civil manner will be removed from their course(s).
