University Admission
Formal admission to the University of Nevada, Reno is NOT required of students who enroll in independent learning courses. Likewise, admission into the Independent Learning Program does not constitute admission to the University.
A nonrefundable application fee of $60 is assessed if you wish to enroll in undergraduate or graduate credit courses, including independent learning courses. This fee applies to ALL students, including independent learning, nondegree, returning and graduate students, who:
When you take and complete any of our credit courses, your grade is recorded on your university transcript and may be ordered from the Office of Admissions and Records. Information about formally applying for admission to the University of Nevada, Reno is provided upon request.
Application for university
enrollment
If this is the first class you have
ever taken at the University of Nevada, Reno, or if you are a continuing
student but did not attend the previous semester, you will also need to submit
the university application form in addition to the independent
learning registration form, regardless of the course delivery method you
have chosen. This will ensure that your personal information is entered into
the university system in order to track your transcript and other important
information.
Prerequisites
You must meet prerequisites listed in the course descriptions. If you have any questions concerning eligibility to enroll in a course, please call, e-mail or write the Independent Learning office explaining the circumstances. Foreign language courses, English 400-level courses, ACC 202 and HCS 200- and 300-level courses all require that you present verification of prerequisites upon registration (in the form of a grade slip or transcript). Enrollment in mathematics courses requires a qualifying score on the University’s Math Placement Test in some cases, or a specific passing grade in the prerequisite course.
Number of courses at one time
You may enroll in as many
courses as you wish. However, if you enroll for 12 credits or more of open-enrollment
courses through independent learning, you will not be classified as a full-time
student, because you are allowed a full year to complete a course. (Enrollment
in 12 credits of semester-based courses constitutes full-time status.) You
may find enrolling in one course at a time is better for you if you have
never taken an independent learning course.
Repeat course policy
If you wish to take an independent learning course in order to improve your grade from the same University of Nevada, Reno course taken previously on campus, or to take a University course on campus to improve your grade from an independent learning course, the course(s) may only be repeated and completed during the next regular semester following the semester in which you were enrolled and in which you completed the first course. This policy applies to 100- and 200-level courses only. The most recent grade earned will be used to calculate your grade point average. To be eligible, a student must file a Repeat
Adjustment Request form in the Office of Admissions and Records, and have it approved prior to enrolling in the repeat course.
