Fees and Other Charges
Fees for Independent Learning university courses are:
Course fees
The standard course fee for independent learning undergraduate university courses for Spring 2008 is $125 per credit, and graduate credit is $180 per credit. (We anticipate Fall 2008 fees will be $138 for undergraduate and $207 for graduate credit.) High school course costs are $100 per each half-unit course. The number of credits and the fees for each course are listed with the course description. (Course fees and textbook prices are subject to change.)
A nonrefundable application fee of $60 is assessed if you wish to enroll in undergraduate or graduate credit courses, including independent learning courses. This fee applies to ALL students, including independent learning, nondegree, returning and graduate students, who:
Students who wish to apply for graduate credit but have not established status with the University’s Graduate School must pay a nonrefundable Graduate Special application fee of $60.
You can pay for tuition, fees and materials for an open-enrollment independent learning course by any of four methods: a personal check; a money order; cash (in person only please); or VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. Telephone and fax registrations are accepted with credit card payment. Semester-based online courses must be enrolled for online at www.unr.edu/epaws/ and payment can be made online with a credit card, or in person at the University Cashier’s Office.
Course materials and textbooks
Your texts, DVDs, CDs and/or other materials are mailed to you from the Independent Learning office upon your enrollment in an open-enrollment course. If you live locally, you may visit our office to pick up your materials if you prefer. Course materials and textbook costs are not included in the course fee and are listed separately. The listed amount in the catalog is the publisher’s price at the time of publication of the catalog and is subject to change without notice. We recommend that you obtain your textbooks from Independent Learning for open-enrollment courses by including the necessary payment with your remittance. A handling fee of $5 must be added to the cost of the textbooks if you submit the order separately from the application for enrollment. Please note: Independent Learning does not buy back textbooks or other course materials.
Texts for online semester-based courses can be purchased from the Independent Learning office in person or can be shipped to your address. If you prefer, most of the texts for online semester-based courses can also be purchased from outside vendors.
Please note: Texts for our courses are NOT available at the University’s ASUN Bookstore on campus.
Handling, stationery and syllabus
The mandatory handling
fees are $10 per credit and vary depending upon the number of credits
per course. The stationery fee is standard for each print-based course and
covers envelopes and cover sheets; the fee is $5 for each print-based
course. The syllabus fee covers the cost of syllabus production and is $25
per course. Neither the syllabus nor the stationery fee applies to online
courses. For online courses, the web fee is $55 per course.
Airmail postage
Your course materials will be mailed
first class to addresses in the Reno-Sparks area, and via UPS or FedEx 5-7–day
ground delivery to addresses outside the Reno area (a street address, rather
than a post office box, is required).
If you enroll by mail or phone and you wish to have your course materials sent via express mail, please include a fee of $30 per course with your application. (If you live in Alaska or Hawaii, course materials are sent first class, so please include a payment of $20.) In these cases, if shipping charges are less than the amount charged the difference will be credited to the student. If the charge is more than what has been paid, the student will be billed the additional amount. (Since shipping costs are determined by package weight, the cost for each course or combination of courses will vary.)
International mail
If you live outside the United States, you must pay the difference between foreign and domestic rates for sending materials and returning lessons. If you request airmail service, you must pay the difference between the actual cost of the airmail postage and the domestic rate by surface mail. Please include a fee of $40 for returning lessons and $50 for sending course materials and texts via airmail. If the shipment costs are less than $50, the difference will be credited to the student.
We recommend international students use e-mail or fax to submit their lessons to avoid the time delays caused by postal mail. If you choose the fax option, you will pay the $25 fax fee in addition to the $40 mail fee to return lessons. All written lessons are returned via airmail by regular postal carrier.
Web fees
For online courses, a web fee of $55 is assessed per
course. Some online courses are assessed a reduced web fee, called an online
fee, of $25.
Faxing lessons
The fee to fax your lessons to the independent
learning office is $25 per
course (nonrefundable), due and payable upon enrollment. Faxed lessons will
be graded and returned by regular mail.
DVD/Video/CD/lab deposits
and fees
For courses requiring
the use of lab kits, VHS films, CDs or DVDs, students are required to pay
a deposit or fee for the use of the material. The amount of the deposit or
fee is indicated for each course and varies depending upon the replacement
cost of the item loaned. A "deposit" is refundable;
a "fee" is not.
For deposits, when the loaned material has been returned to the independent learning office in good condition and within two weeks (unless the item is required for duration of course), a refund check will be issued by the controller's office, or your charge account will be credited. Any nonrefundable fees, which cover our costs of reproducing, processing and mailing CDs, DVDs, labs or videotapes, are shown under each course description in the fee section. If any loaned item is not returned in good condition, you will be billed for the full replacement cost.
Remittance for any balance due is payable immediately. If payment in full is not made within 60 days, you may be assessed a $10 per day penalty fee.
Please note: all fees and prices are subject to change.
