High School Independent Learning Courses
Assignments
(back to main high school page - back to independent learning page)
Make Copies
We encourage students to make a copy of all assignments being
sent to the course instructor. Occasionally mail does get lost and it is
easier to mail another copy of a lost assignment rather than having to
redo it from scratch. The independent learning office is not responsible
for lost mail and no credit will be issued to the student unless all required
assignments and examinations are received by our office to be sent to the
instructor for assessment and grading.
Minimum Completion Time
The minimum completion time is six weeks from the
date that the first assignment is received in our office. The maximum number
of lessons we will accept each week depends upon the total number of lessons
in the course. In some instances, one lesson per week may be the maximum;
other courses may allow two or even three lessons per week. To determine
how many lessons will be accepted, divide by six the number of lessons and
tests required in the course. Failure
to plan ahead and/or to submit lessons regularly cannot be used to waive
minimum completion times.
Fax Machine for Incoming Lessons
Students wishing to send their lessons via
fax may use our fax number, (775) 784-1280. Please note: We do not return
lessons or send out tests via fax. There is a $25 nonrefundable fee per
course for faxing lessons, assessed upon enrollment or when your first faxed
lesson is received.
Lesson Services
Ordinarily you will have your lesson assignments returned
within two weeks. Occasionally delays occur during holidays or when an
instructor has a heavy work load at his or her school. If your deadline falls
within a holiday period, be sure to allow extra time to compensate for any
possible delays. We notify our students whenever any of our instructors will
be gone for a time period exceeding two weeks. If you feel your lessons have
been delayed for an inordinate amount of time, please call the independent
learning office.
Student Workload
The content of a course is equivalent to that of an on-campus
high school course that requires attendance for one hour, five days a week
for entire semester, as well as submission of homework. While the university's
independent learning courses provide an alternative method to study
and learn, they are also rigorous and designed to require hard work and consistent
study habits to complete.
