Refund Policy

Refunds for open-enrollment courses
If you withdraw from an open-enrollment course within two months of the original date of enrollment and have not turned in any lessons, you are eligible for a partial refund. An administrative fee of $75 per course is charged. Seventy-five percent of the course fees and handling, less the administrative fee, is refundable if we receive a request for refund AND the returned course materials within ONE MONTH of the original date of enrollment. Fifty percent of the course fees and handling, less the administrative fee, is refundable if we receive a request for refund AND the returned course materials within TWO MONTHS of the original enrollment date. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY.

We will make no refunds after two months from the original enrollment date. We will make no refunds if any lessons have been submitted to Independent Learning for grading. The student must return the syllabus, stationery and any other course materials in order to be eligible for a refund.

If the textbooks are returned in excellent condition we will refund 50 percent of the original cost of the texts, provided they are currently being used in the course for which they were issued. The student should plan on at least a four-week processing time for the refund check. If the syllabus is returned in damaged condition, written in, etc., a $25 replacement fee will be assessed. A “W” will appear on your transcript for each course withdrawal.

Refunds for semester-based courses
Refund deadlines match the campus calendar for semester-based courses. If you drop before or ON Jan. 31 in Spring, May 19 in Summer, or Sept. 4 in Fall, you will receive a 100 percent refund. For specific refund dates for each semester, visit: www.ss.unr.edu/records/cal.asp.

Textbook refunds for semester-based courses
Independent Learning will not refund textbooks or course materials for semester-based classes after Friday, Feb. 1 for Spring 2008; Friday, May 30 for Summer 2008; and Friday, Sept. 5 for Fall 2008. We are not able to refund books purchased outside our office. Books purchased new must be returned in excellent (new) condition. Shrink-wrapped texts, software, etc., must remain in the original packaging with no seals broken. If textbooks are returned in excellent condition, we will refund 100 percent of the original purchase price. Students should expect a minimum four-week processing period for refund checks.

The Independent Learning office does not buy back textbooks or other materials after the text refund date listed above. Students wishing to sell their books at the end of the semester should call or drop by the ASUN Bookstore located on campus in the Student Union for more information: (775) 784-6597.

Transfer policy
A student may transfer only once from one open-enrollment independent learning course to another. Transfers exclude semester-based courses; students are not allowed to transfer out of or into a semester-based course. The request to transfer and the course materials must be received in our office within three months of the original enrollment. Transfers will be granted only if no lessons have been submitted in the original course. The original date of enrollment remains the same for the new course. The charge to transfer is $75 per course; the handling fee is not transferable to the new course. Please note that the course syllabus and course materials must be returned in order for the transfer to be processed. We will give credit for the textbooks at 50 percent of the original cost if they are in good condition and currently being used in the course for which they were issued. If the syllabus is returned in damaged condition or written in, etc., a $25 replacement fee will be assessed. The handling fees are nonrefundable.

Extension of enrollment period for open-enrollment
courses only

Every student is eligible for one six-month extension for a fee of $75, which must be received on or before the expiration date. There are no second extensions. If a student has not completed a course within the time frame of the first extension, but he/she wants to complete the course, the student will need to completely re-enroll for the course. There are no refunds for extensions.
