Student Services
University of Nevada, Reno student identification
card
Local independent learning students may apply for and receive a WolfCard student identification card from the University of Nevada, Reno Student Union Building. In order to receive this card, a student’s course registration must appear in the University’s computer system. Please check with the Independent Learning office to determine whether you’re eligible for the WolfCard and for details on how to obtain one. Students enrolled in high school courses through Independent Learning are not eligible. A $7 fee is charged to cover the costs of issuing the card; and $11 is charged for replacing a lost card. Cardholder’s privileges include use of the library, computer labs, Mathematics Center, Writing Center, tutoring services in the Academic Skills Center and notary public service at the University. WolfCards cannot be issued to students who are unable to be present for photographing.
Library and computer lab privileges
The Independent Learning Program cooperates with the University of Nevada, Reno’s Getchell Library to extend library privileges to local students enrolled in independent learning university courses. You may use the library once your enrollment is in the system and you have obtained your WolfCard.
Tutoring service
Tutoring for independent learning students, drop-in computer/web use, math centers and academic counseling and support group information for older and returning undergraduate students are available on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. For more information about tutoring, drop in the Academic Skills Center, located in Suite 100 of the Thompson Building; call (775) 784-6801; e-mail urban@unr.edu, or visit https://studentdev.unr.edu/asc/students/.
Fax machine for incoming lessons
Students in print-based courses wishing to send their lessons via fax may use our fax number, (775) 784-1280. Please note: We do not return lessons via fax. There is a $25 nonrefundable fee per course for faxing lessons, assessed upon enrollment or when the first faxed lesson is received. All faxed lessons must be faxed with an independent learning cover sheet indicating the full name and mailing address of the student, and the total number of pages being faxed. Each subsequent page of the fax needs to indicate page 2 of 5, 3 of 5, 4 of 5, etc.
E-mailing lessons and questions to instructors
Independent learning students in print-based courses have found e-mailing lessons can be a quick, less expensive form of lesson submission. While e-mailing lessons is not an option in courses that are not essay based, (such as accounting and statistics), all students are welcome to use e-mail for questions to their instructors. Your instructor’s e-mail address is listed in the course syllabus along with instructions on how to address your e-mail lessons, if applicable. If the instructor’s e-mail is not listed, you may send lessons and/or questions to: istudy@unr.edu.
Equal access
Independent Learning supports providing equal access to students with disabilities. Any student with a disability who needs academic adjustments or accommodations is requested to contact Independent Learning, or the Disability Resource Center at (775) 784-6000. Please call as early as possible to arrange for appropriate accommodations.
