Welcome to the Electronic Classroom
In
the electronic classroom, students at all locations can talk to each other
and to the instructor during class. Whether or not students can all be seen
by the instructor depends on the delivery system. Each remote site is staffed
with a Site Facilitator who attends all class meetings to operate the classroom
equipment, proctor exams, collect and return homework, and handle other administrative
tasks normally done by the instructor during class.
With EDE, "origination site" refers to the classroom where the
instructor is present. Usually this is a Reno campus classroom. "Remote
site(s)" refers to classrooms in all other communities where students
are simultaneously participating in an EDE course (e.g., Carson City, Elko,
Fallon, Hawthorne, Las Vegas, Lovelock, Lund, Minden/Gardnerville, Owyhee,
Tonopah, Winnemucca, Yerington).
The following are EDE delivery systems used by the university:
Instructional Television Fixed Service (ITFS)*
One-way,
full motion video reception of a live course (students see origination site)
received via microwave antenna. All sites communicate via telephone.
Interactive Video*
Two-way, compressed motion
video of a live course (all sites see each other). Two-way audio among all
sites. This system uses specialized telephone lines
and equipment for reception and display.
Internet
Online courses are available through
Independent Learning. Students need access to a computer, a printer, and
the Internet.
*Many ITFS and Interactive Video courses also have Internet components.
For more information about EDE course see registration
and policies.
